Trusted partner since 2018

For over five years, we’ve partnered with L’Oréal across their portfolio of brands to design and launch products that redefine what’s possible in beauty and wellness. Our collaboration goes far beyond project delivery: we work as an integrated extension of their team, blending research, strategy, design, and engineering to create experiences that feel seamless for consumers and scalable for the business.

From AI-powered diagnostics to connected devices and environmental insights,
our projects explore how technology can unlock personalization at every level. Together, we’ve prototyped, tested,
and launched award-winning tools that empower consumers, professionals,
and internal teams alike.

Featured projects

Waterfacts

A consumer-facing tool that connects local water quality data to skin health. By analyzing exposure to minerals, hardness, and pollutants, Waterfacts recommends tailored routines and product adjustments. The experience bridges environmental science with daily skincare, helping users adapt based on where they live.

BrowMagic

A mobile-guided AR experience that lets users preview and map eyebrow styles in real time. With face tracking and pattern recognition, the app creates a personalized stencil for precise at-home application. Integrated hardware ensures salon-level accuracy with consumer-friendly simplicity.

Breezometer

An AI-powered diagnosis engine that combines environmental data (UV, pollution, humidity) with skincare science. Serving as the backend for multiple consumer experiences, it delivers hyper-personalized recommendations in real time.

Custom D.O.S.E. (SkinCeuticals)

An in-office diagnostic and formulation platform that blends expert consultation with high-potency ingredients to create a personalized corrective serum. Our companion app controls dispensing hardware with precision (1,200 RPM mixers, custom plunger profiles) and manages refill cycles.

FAQ

How long has Born West collaborated with L’Oréal, and in what capacity?
Our partnership spans more than five years across multiple divisions, brands, and research areas. We support both public-facing consumer launches and internal innovation platforms, embedding design and engineering expertise directly into L’Oréal’s global R&D pipeline.
What kinds of innovations has this partnership produced?
The work ranges from connected devices and AR-powered consumer experiences to AI-driven diagnostic engines and data visualization for research. Many of these projects explore personalization at scale, helping L’Oréal translate science into accessible tools for consumers and professionals.
Have the projects been recognized by the industry?
Yes. Several initiatives have been featured at CES, where L’Oréal consistently debuts breakthrough technologies. For example, My Skin Track UV was named a CES Innovation Award honoree, and L’Oréal Water Saver won the CES 2021 Best of Innovation Award for sustainability. SkinCeuticals Custom D.O.S.E. received Allure’s Best of Beauty Award. These recognitions underscore how our joint work bridges scientific rigor and consumer impact.
How do you collaborate with L’Oréal teams across such different domains?
The partnership is highly integrated. Our designers and engineers work directly with L’Oréal researchers, marketers, and product leads, adapting to their fast-moving innovation cycles. We’ve supported early proof-of-concepts, built production-ready software, and created flexible design systems that scale across global brands.
Do you focus only on design, or do you also handle engineering?
Both. Born West combines strategy, UX, and visual design with robust engineering. Many projects start with rapid prototyping, then move into production-grade development, ensuring the final product is not only beautiful but also functional and reliable.
Are all of these projects public?
Not all. While CES launches and award-winning products are widely recognized, a significant part of our collaboration involves internal AI platforms, data tools, and early-stage experiments. These projects may not be visible to consumers, but they shape the foundation for L’Oréal’s future launches.
