The Role

As a Ruby on Rails Engineer at Born West, you will contribute to building and scaling production-grade web applications. You will be involved across the full product lifecycle — from architecture and development to deployment, optimization, and long-term maintenance.

You’ll work closely with designers, product managers, founders, and clients to turn ideas into robust digital products.

Key Responsibilities

• Build robust, scalable, and maintainable Ruby on Rails applications with strong test coverage.
• Design and implement clean, efficient, and reusable code.
• Debug issues, fix bugs, and identify performance bottlenecks.
• Optimize application performance and scalability.
• Participate in system architecture and technical decision-making.
• Deploy and maintain multi-tier, multi-environment web applications.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and ship features.
• Work closely with clients and stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver solutions.
• Contribute to improving internal engineering processes and best practices.
• Continuously evaluate and adopt modern tools and technologies to enhance development efficiency.

What We’re Looking For

Core Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
• Strong understanding of Object-Oriented Design and software engineering principles.
• Experience writing and maintaining unit and integration tests.
• Solid understanding of relational databases and data modeling.
• Comfortable working with JavaScript and frontend fundamentals.
• Good understanding of HTML, HTML5, and CSS.
• Comfortable using the Unix/Linux command line.
• Experience using Git for version control and collaboration.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a team.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Growth-oriented, humble, and ownership-driven mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building database-driven applications with significant user interaction.
• Familiarity with background jobs, caching (Redis), and performance optimization techniques.
• Exposure to modern frontend frameworks such as React or similar.
• Experience with NoSQL/document databases.
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies and project management tools.
• Experience with SASS, LESS, or HAML.
• Contributions to open-source projects are a plus.
